Calculate hoop house dimensions: cover area, volume, plastic needed, and hoop spacing.

Formula

Arc = π × r; Cover area = arc × length; Volume = (π × r² / 2) × length
  • Assumes semicircular cross-section. Arc = π × (width/2).
  • Add end walls separately: each end = π × r² / 2 sq ft.
  • Plastic usually sold in 25 ft, 50 ft, or 100 ft rolls at various widths.

20 ft wide, 100 ft long, 4 ft hoop spacing

Inputs
  • Width (inside): 20 ft
  • Length: 100 ft
  • Hoop Spacing: 4 ft

Arc = π × 10 = 31.42 ft. Cover = 31.42 × 100 = 3142 sq ft. Volume = (π×100/2)×100 = 15,708 cu ft. Hoops: 26.

Frequently asked questions

What width of plastic do I need?
The arc length (perimeter of the half-circle cross-section) determines the minimum plastic roll width. Add 2–3 ft for securing at ground level on each side.
