BODE Index (COPD)

kg/m²
%
m

Calculate the BODE index to predict mortality in COPD patients.

Formula

BODE = BMI pts + FEV1 pts + mMRC pts + 6MWD pts (0–3 each); max = 10
  • BMI: ≤21 = 1 pt; FEV1%: 65+ = 0, 50–64 = 1, 36–49 = 2, ≤35 = 3.
  • mMRC: 0–1 = 0 pt, 2 = 1 pt, 3 = 2 pts, 4 = 3 pts.
  • 6MWD: ≥350m = 0, 250–349 = 1, 150–249 = 2, <150 = 3.

BMI 20, FEV1 55%, mMRC 2, 6MWD 300 m

Inputs
  • BMI: 20 kg/m²
  • FEV1 % Predicted: 55 %
  • mMRC Dyspnea Scale (0–4): 2
  • 6-Minute Walk Distance: 300 m

BMI(1)+FEV1(1)+mMRC(1)+Walk(1) = 4. ~67% 52-month survival.

Frequently asked questions

What does a high BODE index indicate?
Higher BODE index = worse prognosis. BODE > 6 is associated with markedly reduced survival and may indicate need for lung transplant evaluation.
